What is Calligraphy and how is it used today?

Have you wondered what calligraphy actually is and what makes it so special? It can sometimes  be confused with hand lettering or described as a font or typeface. However, a  typeface or font although often elegant has a uniformity which belies its machine made nature and lacks the unique personality of a handwritten script which is so special.

Calligraphy is actually a skilful art form that has a rich history and historical basis.  It is created by hand using a traditional  dip pen with ink on a metal nib.  It takes time to master the letterforms of a script.  Each letter is formed with care and thoughtful consideration, with strokes drawn individually to create the letterform. It is a slow and meditative process.  Pressure and release of the nib creates swells of ink and give the words rhythm and grace as they dance across a page.  The word calligraphy derives its origin from the Greek word -kallos - which means beauty and -graphein- which means to write.  But it is so much more than simple handwriting.  It requires harmony, balance and precision to convey words in a way that is evocative and beautiful, sharing some of the penman’s unique style and traits.

There are many different scripts and styles of calligraphy that can be studied and their use traced through various eras of history.  Whilst practicing and learning calligraphy it is easy to get lost in a rabbit warren of styles, techniques and historical study, which I find incredibly joyful.

Calligraphy today is used in many ways.  It is a unique way to create memorable stationery, impressing and delighting guests at your wedding or special event by having their names handwritten elegantly on name cards, envelope addressing or invitations. Conveying very personal messages, often of a romantic nature, in love letters or using calligraphy to celebrate special events with wedding vows, scripture verses, anniversary and new-born gifts among my favourite pieces to create.

Are you are looking for a unique gift to make the recipient feel incredibly special or to have meaningful quotes or verses that resonate with you scribed elegantly? I would advise contacting a calligrapher to discuss your project. Engaging with someone knowledgable and passionate about their craft will give you a much more personal experience than simply printing your text.
